GG Guide to NYC Classic: Butter

They're the words that launched a dozen scandals: "Butter was closed that night." This time on GG Guide to NYC, we'll be covering a Manhattan hotspot that B and J once visited, but one that also — crucially — S didn't.

Remember the end of last season? We'll refresh your memory: Grifter duo Poppy and Gabe teamed up to scam Serena and ended up ensnaring practically the whole cast in their web of lies. And how did Blair ultimately bring the truth to light? Gabe claimed to have met S way back in Season 1, during her wild night with Georgina, at East Village hotspot Butter. But Blair knew that wasn't true, as she herself was using Butter's DJ to sabotage Nelly Yuki that night, and B never forgets a scheme. It's not surprising Butter stuck in B's memory — it's also the site of her humiliation at the hands of Little J. (Check out the vid below for a refresher.)

Butter is one of *the* places in town for real-life scenesters to hang out. Who knows? You may even catch one of the Gossip Girl stars sipping a martini there. The restaurant/nightclub hybrid played host to Leighton Meester when she attended pal Robin Thicke's album release party back in December.

Now is a great time for NYC GG fans to check Butter out — it's restaurant week, and Butter is opening its doors to the plebes with discounts on delish meals like Shrimp Ravioli with Braised Dandelion Greens and Fresh Mint. Blake on Her Amazing Skin

You few, you strong, you unspoiled... cover your eyes and sing "La la la la" as loud as you can, because we're delving into serious spoiler territory. Or, you know, just don't read the rest.

Michael Ausiello finally clues us in on what could drive the golden couple apart: good ol' Uncle Jack.

Question: Could you give us more details about Blair and Chuck’s break-up on Gossip Girl? —Larissa
Ausiello: Blame Jack Bass. It’s all his fault.

Ugh. Of course it is. Jack Bass is the worst uncle this side of Hamlet. So does this have to do with Chuck's mysterious new mom figure? It just keeps on getting Shakespearier and Shakespearier. We don't really see B going the wimpy Ophelia route, though.

So are Chair dunzo for goodzo? GG Executive Producer Stephanie Savage had this to say to Kristin from Watch With Kristin:

“Last year, Blair made a pledge to Chuck: ‘The worst thing you’ve ever done, the darkest thought you’ve ever had. I’ll stand by you through anything.’ Well this spring, this oath is tested,” Savage tells Fancast.

No one at the show is officially confirming the rumored break-up — let alone what Chuck might do to precipitate it. Instead, Savage only teases: “Will Blair stand by her man? Or has Chuck finally played one game too many? Tune in and find out.”

Savage, you're killing us here. We'll take our dose of tragedy in English-lit form, thanks — Chuck and Blair better get their happy ending or we'll get all Macbeth up in here.

Blair to Switch Shows, Get Even Scarier?

Leighton Meester (Blair) and her buddy Nina Dobrev have a lot in common: They're both knockout brunettes, they're both appearing in the upcoming film The Roommate, and they both star in sexy CW dramas (Dobrev is on Vampire Diaries). Now they're talking about guest starring on each other's shows. Blair Waldorf as a literal bloodsucker? We're having nightmares already.

"I love that idea!" Levy said of having Nina guest star on Gossip Girl and Leighton guest star on Vampire Diaries some time in the future. The idea came up while I was chatting with Nina and Levy at a recent press event, and Levy said: "We're gonna work on that. You have my word."

Chuck/Blair Spoiler: It's Not as Bad as You Think

The spoiled among us have been wringing our headbands over the bomb of Chuck and Blair's imminent breakup. Then it got even worse: Rumors began circulating that the impetus for their split is Chuck's hookup with... Jenny! Say it ain't so!

It ain't, says TV spoiler maven Kristen from Watch with Kirsten.

Patricia in Boston: At first I was just sad about the Chuck-Blair breakup news, but now I am freaking the hell out. Is it true that the horrible thing Chuck does is sleep with Jenny Humphrey? I'll never watch Gossip Girl again if that's what happens!
Well, don't delete that Gossip Girl season pass from your TiVo just yet, because sources assure us that this particular rumor is totally false. So, while we can't tell you yet what bad thing Chuck does do, we can assure that you, no, Chuck does not sleep with Jenny. Whew.

Lauren in New York City: I'm so sad about Chuck and Blair breaking up on Gossip Girl! Anything new on that?
Ed Westwick himself says of Gossip Girl's upcoming storylines, "It all gets set on its side. Everything goes upside down. Things are going to get even more dramatic than they always are." And Gossip boss Josh Schwartz tweeted, "Trust. #ChuckandBlair." Believe the man. Josh is the one who made Chuck and Blair so awesome in the first place, and he wouldn't be breaking them up unless it was part of a greater plan, right?

That's a pretty cryptic tweet on the part of showrunner Schwartz. Do you think he means we should trust that they'll make it in the long run, or that trust issues will drive them apart? Hmm...

Kristen also has some news on the return of van der Woodsen senior:

Chloe in Grand Island, Neb.: I approve of the casting of Billy Baldwin (although John Slattery would have been ideal) as Serena's dad on Gossip Girl, but I now have to know before I get too excited. Is Daddy van der Woodsen completely evil, or does he have any redeeming qualities?
We're told we'll see that William van der Woodsen does want to get back into Serena and Eric's life on Gossip Girl. That doesn't mean he's a pure good guy—his motives for seeing them could be totally dark side—but at least he's no longer totally dissing his own children.

So he's got complicated motives and a hidden agenda. Well... yeah. It's Gossip Girl. We figured. Not super informative, K.

Badgley Saves the Day!

Super-Penn to the rescue! Mr. Badgley (Dan) reportedly saved his mom, Lynne, after a skiing accident on Christmas afternoon.

It all went down when Penn and Blake (Serena) were vacationing together with their families in Park City, Utah. While out hitting the slopes, Lynne slid out of control and smashed headfirst into the snow. Ouch. Luckily, Penn was close by to summon help, and Lynne walked away with only a headache and a sprained shoulder.

Aww, how sweet — we love a guy who takes care of his mom. This act of heroism certainly doesn't hurt his cause to be the new Spiderman, either!

Anatomy of an Outfit: Serena's Single-Shouldered Purple Alexander Wang Dress in Episode 3.6

We've noticed a heck of a lot of micro mini-dresses on the blonde GG girls this season -- so micro, in fact, that there is *definitely* no sitting down or bending over in those frocks without creative leg placement. Serena's gorgeous one-sleeved Alexander Wang ruched dress in deep purple (rich purples seem to be a theme for Season 3—see "Little J's in a Purple Haze") looks fierce on her in a laid-back glam way. She's really workin' those purple hues, but breaks it up with pop of color around her left wrist—what looks to be a purple and jade green beaded necklace worn as a bracelet.

Panning south, S gives us further proof that nothing complements a long, lean leg like a Louboutin. We can buy the Louboutin's, but the long, lean legs? Eh, not so much. The other night she wandered into Phillipe, an oh-so-trendy Chinese restaurant on E. 60th Street in New York, in the company of a posse of pals, plus Ed Westwick, who plays her on-screen love, Chuck Bass. According to witnesses, the group's behavior was nasty, naughty, and profane. Leave it to Ed, said to be a real sweetheart IRL, to save the night by hugging it out with the offended.

The Scoop Behind Ed and Jessica's Movie Date

We didn't spot Ed Westwick (Chuck) in any of Jessica Szohr's (Vanessa) photos from the Youth in Revolt Preem, and we wondered why. Apparently the low-key actor was in tow that Tuesday night (January 5).

According to Hollywood Life, the couple nixed the long red carpet for a trip to the concession stand! They loaded up on on a slew of snacks, including nachos with jalapenos, Sour Patch Kids, and a small popcorn. We're guessing Jessica will have to do a few more chin-ups at the monkeybars to burn off those calories!

The date night scoop ends there, but we're guessing Ed and Jessica took advantage of the dark theater for a little post-Sour Patch Kids make-out sesh! Hawt.

Congrats, Ed Westwick (Chuck)! Cosmopolitan has just named him a "Fun Fearless Male of 2010." The dashing actor shares this coveted title with 14 other "bold yet surprisingly sweet" guys including cutie GG executive producer Josh Schwartz and hottie Kellan Lutz. They're not exactly Emmys, but they are two more wins for the Gossip guys! And Ed really does deserve this title -- there's definitely something "fun and fearless" about baring his hairy heaveage in nippy winter climes (sorry, we had to!).

Ed admits to Cosmo he's hopeless romantic, "I have faith in love. They say to fall in love, you have to take a leap. There’s something incredibly exciting about that." With recent news of Ed and his GG co-star and girlfriend, Jessica Szohr (Vanessa), shacking up, could their relationship be headed toward the ultimate leap of faith sometime soon?

And as for Ed's most fearless act of late he tells the mag, "I like to do this trick where you lay your hand down on a table, pick up a knife, and stab it between your fingers quickly. I’ve cut myself once or twice, but I’ve still got five fingers. Sounds a little bit dangerous, eh?" Eek! Ed, we hope you nix the knife tricks -- Chuck's bow-ties would be pretty hard to tie when you're missing a few digits! Jussss' sayin'.

FYI: Apparently the UES is full of fun, fearless males! Chace Crawford received the nod last year. If this pattern keeps going, will 2011 finally be Penn Badgley (Dan), Matthew Settle (Rufus), or Conor Paolo's (Eric) year to be fun and fearless? We hope so!

Get in Shape with Jessica Szohr's Playground Workout

Her Gossip Girl character, Vanessa, may be crazy and out of touch with reality, but actress Jessica Szohr has a refreshingly realistic attitude about health and fitness. In 2008, she collaborated with the editors of Self magazine to design a popular and fun playground workout that can be done almost anywhere. Here are some highlights:

What she loves about the workout: “The playground workout is great because you can do those exercises both outdoors and indoors by swapping out the picnic benches and swing sets for chairs, benches or whatever is in my hotel room when I am traveling! I definitely don’t drive myself nuts over always getting a workout in, but I will do what I can.”

Jessica isn't just smart about working out, however. She also has a balanced approach to diet and nutrition. She recently shared her laid-back philosophy about food and exercise with FitSugar.com: "For me it’s just about balance because I’m not the greatest eater ever. I like my pizza and french fries with ranch sauce. But I also realize if I’m going to eat a lot then I have to work out a little bit. So I try to do yoga a couple times a week. And I’m trying to start to do cardio, but it takes me like 30 minutes to run a mile so it’s not working out so well. I have been lately, more than normal, which is probably good because I’m going to eat a ton of cookies and stuff."

The actress goes on to add, "I think it’s balance. I try during the week not to eat whatever I want, kind of like, eat healthier. And on the weekend its like, you know what? I’m going to eat french fries." Atta girl, Jess!

Chace Crawford to Present at the Golden Globes

We were all disappointed when Kelly Rutherford showed up to rep Gossip Girl at the People's Choice Awards completely alone (with all the recent gossip, we thought Chace might show up on her arm). Furthermore, how could Starship Cobra replace classy Leighton Meester with skank Nicole Scherzinger!? And even more disappointment: we got zero sexy shots of the Gossip guys in suits. It's just not fair!

Taylor Momsen Wants to be Taken Seriously...

...among other things. This not-quite- seventeen year old talks to Seventeen magazine in their February 2010 edition about fame, boys, and being a rocker. Highlights include:

Fame frankly means nothing. It’s so stupid. Unless you do something great and unless you do something that’s fulfilling to you, what’s the point?
I get such a bad rap for being like Lindsay Lohan. I hate naming names because she’s really sweet — and I’m really not. I don’t go out. I have no desire to be some tabloid party girl. I’m entirely a loner. I have been my entire life.
I’m not interested in playing the field and all that stuff because frankly I’m not into frivolous relationships. I’ve got a couple close relationships with friends, a close relationship with my family, and a close relationship with my guitar. I’ll know if the right person comes along, and whatever then — cool — but it’s not something I’m seeking out at the moment.

NATE ARCHIBALD BACKSTORY

Nathaniel Archibald was born to Howard Archibald, a successful business magnate, and Anne Archibald. Nate is close friends with Chuck Bass, with whom he attends the prestigious St. Jude's School for Boys. Nate has been with girlfriend Blair Waldorf "since kindergarten". For the first half of the season he secretly harbors a lust for Blair's best friend, Serena Van der Woodsen, with whom he had a passionate one night stand. This infatuation seems to have fizzled toward the latter half of the season, as he realizes that it's Blair he loves.

Full Episode Synopsis

Serena (Blake Lively) decides to throw Jenny (Taylor Momsen) an intimate party for her sixteenth birthday, but things get way out of control when Poppy Lifton (guest star Tamara Feldman) turns the small gathering into a huge social event. In a moment of weakness, Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) agrees to help Chuck (Ed Westwick) with a scheme having to do with Blair (Leighton Meester) and Nate (Chace Crawford). Rufus (Matthew Settle) learns that Dan (Penn Badgley) will not receive financial aid at Yale and tries to figure out another way to cover the cost of his education. Kelly Rutherford also stars.

Ah mornings in Manhattan... After a strange convo with Blair, Serena, out and about in NYC runs into her old socialite friend Poppy Lifton on the street. Serena invites Poppy and her boyfriend to a party she is throwing a Sweet Sixteen party, but during their talk she realizes she is kind of in a rut. Back at S's house we learn that they are throwing a HUGE party for Jenny complete with a DJ, a caterer, etc. Somehow little J is not a huge fan of the idea. Serena can't understand why, but Jonathon thinks Jenny is worried that no one will show up, since she does not have that many friends since she got back to Constance. S finds out Penelope was planning a party for the same night when the mean girls tease her about canceling her own party out of fear that Penelope's would be better. So instead of canceling the party, she calls Poppy.

Vanessa hasn't heard from Nate in a week, when she finally gets an email from him asking her to meet him at his place. When she gets there, she sees none other than Blair Waldorf leave his house with a hug. Chuck pulls up and says that he sent the email, and that B has been leaving Nate's house every day that week and when she is ready to do something about it, she should get in touch with him. Now we know why B was being so sneaky with S on the phone earlier that morning.

Dan was denied financial aide at Yale and Rufus confides in Lily about how worried he is about it. Lily offers to help financially and when Rufus refuses, she suggests that he sell the loft and move in with her. Dan, who doesn't yet know about any of this, gets intecepts a call from teh realtor.

Chuck confronts Blair about leaving Nate's house in each AM, and she tells him she just brings him breakfast, like good friends sometimes do. Chuck says that those two never had a spark anyway, at least not compared to B and himself. Blair is kinda offended by this and tells Chuck that it might be easy to be with Nate, but that doesn't make it wrong.

Later Blair and Nate go for a walk in the park and Nate says that his relationship with Vanessa is probably over and he will confirm that later at dinner. Then, comparing themselves to Brangelina, talk about getting together themselves.

Serena and Poppy take Jenny shopping and Poppy convinces Serena that she needs to have this party for Jenny.

At dinner, Nate denies there was anyone else involved in their break-up, but they break up just the same. Nate goes over to B's to tell her the good news and kisses her on the forehead and leaves. Blair is perturbed and starts to think Chuck may have been right about there not being a spark between them, but if we know Blair, she is not going to take this lying down.

Vanessa goes to meet Chuck and they scheme.

Dan and Jenny show up at Serena's, a wide variety of board games in tow, and of course they walk in on quite the scene: a poppy-lifton-style party (Even Penelope is there, seems she canceled her own party to attend this one). Jenny goes up to Serena and tells her that she didn't want this, but Serena . Eric says that Serena maybe just threw the party to show that she could still throw a party and when Jenny hears this she texts Gossip Girl for everyone to come. A TON of rowdy high school kids show up and totally mess up Serena's classy party.

When Chuck and Vanessa show up at the party, they see Nate and Blair talking and (presumably to make them jealous) Chuck and Vanessa kiss. Yes, you heard me right! CHUCK AND VANESSA KISS!

Nate confronts Vanessa and when he tells her there is no one else in his life, Blair begs to differ. She drags him into a room and tries to make out with him, but he doesn't want to, saying that they are friends. Later, after Blair storms out, Nate congratulates V on being more like Blair (and imitating her scheming ways).

Meanwhile, the cops are called on the rager, because there are about a million people trying to break down the door. Lily and Rufus show up and question the kids about what happened. Jenny gets in trouble but says that she doesn't want to be a Park Avenue Princess. Then everyone learns about the realtor phone call. Later Lily and Rufus decide it's too soon to move in together. Rufus and Dan decide they will figure out another way for him to get to Yale.

Meanwhile, Serena realizes that between fighting on and off with her frenemy, dating on and off her high school boyfriend, throwing a lame party and getting yelled at by her mom, she is still in a rut. Poppy invites her on a private jet to Costa Brava, España and she accepts.

On a walk in the park with Dorota, Blair realizes that Nate is nice and hanging out with him was fun, and although there were not real lightning or sparks. Just then she seems him waiting where she likes to feed the ducks. He had called Dorota ask where he favorite place was, cause that's where he wants their first kiss to be!!! Nate tells B that he does want to be with her, just not "like that" (her throwing herself at him in Chuck's bed) and they kiss.

Serena meets Poppy's boyfriend Gabriel, and he recognizes her from back when she was hanging out with Georgina.

Dan goes to return the phone call of a random fan that has written to him about a piece he wrote. Or is the fan so random? Apparently, his fan is Scott, the presumed-dead son of Lily and Rufus. His parent's answer his phone and when Dan says his name and that Scott wrote him a letter, they freak out. Dan apparently has no idea about the identity of his "fan".

But the big shocker of the evening is Chuck and Vanessa. They spent the night together after the party and are shockingly not all that grossed out in the morning. They agree that they will keep this "relationship" on the DL, and that it's purely physical. Interesting...

VANESSA ABRAMS BACKSTORY

Vanessa Abrams is a young artist, and she remains an outcast among the other wealthy teens. Appropriately, Dan Humphrey is her best friend, as they both come from the same middle-class background. Vanessa works at a coffee shop. It appears as though she and Dan have a bit of a history, but this has not been entirely revealed. There is definitely tension between Vanessa and Serena van Woodsen, which became apparent when the Dan and Serena began dating.

Towards the end of season one, Vanessa and Nate Archibald began to develop a romance; however, Nate called it off before it really got started.

Jennifer Tallulah Humphrey is considered to be the main character of the Gossip Girl novels. She is the daughter of rocker Rufus Humphrey and the younger sister of Dan Humphrey. DAN HUMPHREY BACKSTORY

Daniel Jonah Humphrey, or simply known as Dan Humphrey, is a main character in the best selling Gossip Girl book series. He is portrayed by Penn Badgley in the TV series.

Dan "Lonely Boy" Humphrey is the son of rocker Rufus Humphrey, and is the older sibling of Jenny Humphrey. Dan is a poet and attends the St. Jude’s School for boys with enemy Chuck Bass. Mr. Waldorf left Mrs. Waldorf for a man named Roman, and ran off to Paris. “I’ve heard horror stories form other actors about egos, people who don’t get along, but we’re all friends. There are people from this job who will be in my life for a very, very long time… Sometimes we double-date with Penn [Badgley] and Blake [Lively], or Leighton [Meester] and Sebastian [Stan]. We all hang out.”

On getting together with Ed:
“It kind of just happened. We had fun together, and we were like, ‘All right, let’s see where this goes.’ He’s a really rad guy. He’s awesome and smart and talented and adorable, and we make each other laugh.”

A few weeks ago a rumor started spreading about how these two were SO over. But if she is still calling him "awesome" in an interview, there might be hope yet for "Jed."

Josh Schwartz Season Three Interview

Check out this TV Guide interview with executive producer Josh Schwartz about what's in store for the 2010 portion of Season 3...

TVGuide.com: What are you gearing towards in the season's second half?
Josh Schwartz: You're really going to see a real emotional arc from Chuck [Ed Westwick]. I think Jenny [Taylor Momsen] and Chuck are really going to be driving a lot of story as we move into the back half of the season.

TVGuide.com: Jenny and Eric (Connor Paolo) called a truce in the last episode. Will that actually stick?
Schwartz: They've called a truce with each other, but Jenny's troubles are just beginning. She's still very much a teenage girl, she's grown up with these kids who are older than her and always wanted to be a part of that, but she's going to find out that she's not quite as adult and grown up as she thinks she is.

TVGuide.com: Blair (Leighton Meester) and Chuck's relationship seems to be going smoothly this season.
Schwartz: Yeah, although there was that moment at the end of the episode where Chuck saw that mysterious woman at his father's grave. That's really going to be a big part of it. We really want to move Chuck back into the forefront of the ensemble for a portion of these back episodes. You'll have to watch and see if it's his mother.

TVGuide.com: Serena seems to be lost this season, with jumping from guy to guy and switching careers.
Schwartz: Well, she was trying to find her dad, and failing that, there's certainly an issue she's been dealing with in finding men in her life that will fill that void. She's lurched from guy to guy as she's trying to make sense of that missing figure in her life.

TVGuide.com: Will she be able to redeem herself?
Schwartz: That is her journey for the rest of the season. It's a journey of redemption and maturity and understanding why she's doing the things she's doing and taking back control of that.

TVGuide.com: Will she continue to mess up along that journey?
Schwartz: Oh yeah, tons. It's Gossip Girl.

TVGuide.com: Are we going to meet Mr. van der Woodsen this season?
Schwartz: We are going to continue to explore Serena's quest for her father. Obviously he resurfaced in Lily's [Kelly Rutherford] life and was in that letter that caused so much controversy at Christmas and Thanksgiving. That has definitely been set up.

TVGuide.com: Why did you decide to pursue the Dan and Vanessa story line this season? It can obviously become very complicated being friends.
Schwartz: Yeah, and that's going to be something that they're going to explore. They've been friends for so long. She had feelings for him awhile ago and then he discovers he has feelings for her. Can they have feelings for each other and still remain friends is going to be a big question that we're going to tackle. I really like them together. I think you can bet on them exploring the complexities of their friendship.

TVGuide.com: There was a lot of controversy surrounding the threesome among Dan, Vanessa and Olivia (Hilary Duff). It wasn't as crazy as people were making it out to be.
Schwartz: We were surprised when it generated as much controversy as it did. Especially in that first episode, it wasn't so outrageous and a shock to the world. I actually really liked it because I thought it felt very, very real and tentative and it had big emotional repercussions for the characters. I like the way the writers designed it and it wasn't just for shock value, but was actually being done to move story and explore these character dynamics.

TVGuide.com: Do you see any futures episodes of plot lines that will cause this kind of controversy again?
Schwartz: Keep your eye on little Jenny Humphrey.

Gossip Girl Hiatus Fun!

Rumor has it that there will be no new episodes of Gossip Girl until (gasp!) March of 2010! There are still a few places out there on the inter-web that claim we'll get a new episode as early as Jan. 4th, but I am afraid to admit those sources might be a little outdated. So, what to do until then? Looks like we're just going to have to amuse ourselves. Here are some hot spots on the site to keep an eye on for all those long, cold Monday nights:

Art Basel Versus Gossip Girl

Check out this article by Manish Vora that appeared in the Huffington Post last week comparing the impact of the biggest annual art event in the country with the impact of Gossip Girl on the art world. It claims that the Art Basel event is still very important in art circles, Gossip Girl seems to be reaching a wider audience and exposing them to art in several ways. So, is Gossip Girl not just a guilty pleasure?! Decide for yourself:

Could it be that the hit television show, Gossip Girl, will have a bigger impact on the future of the art market than the "largest, most important" annual art event in America"? I'm leaning in favor of Gossip Girl.

This week is undoubtedly important for the art world's governing elite. Each December, galleries, art insiders, press and collectors from across the globe descend on Miami for what is considered the most "important" week for the US art market. At the center is Art Basel Miami Beach (opened Wednesday, December 2), the sister fair of the annual gathering in Basel, Switzerland. At Art Basel alone, there are 250 galleries, over 1,500 artists shown and an estimated $250 million of sales.

At parties and dinners, connections are made, future shows are planned, loads of money are exchanged and new artists are declared the next hot thing. But what impact does the largest and most "important" event have on the interest and support of art across the country? Of the 150,000 people attending and those reading the art press, how many non insiders are being introduced to new artists or getting excited about a career in the arts?

And Scattered across South Beach and Wynwood there are more than 15 satellite fairs bringing another 1,000 galleries and 3,000 artists. In total, it is estimated that $500M+ of sales will occur by week's end and will draw in more than 150,000 people from across the globe. While the public can purchase tickets for every fair, the doors are still very much closed on the real action. Art insiders and the elite attend free VIP openings and each night get wined and dined at sponsored dinners and parties. The velvet ropes and lists come out as the established shake hands and those aspiring desperately try to join in. There are multiple events a night at places like the Standard, the W-South Beach, the Delano & Raleigh hotels.

By Thursday morning (one day into the fairs), the conclusions of the impact of this year's Art Basel will be in. Just twelve hours after the Art Basel Vernissage, the art press will have likely declared "attendance was strong, collectors were more prudent in their purchases, but sales were happening and were stronger than last year." The news for the rest of the week will likely be dominated by big name collectors making purchases and the celebrity round up of sightings and parties hosted by the likes of Lance Armstrong, Val Kilmer, Sylvester Stallone, Dr. Dre, Paris Hilton and the Olsen twins. Business will go on as usual and we in the art business will return to our homes in NYC, LA, London and Berlin.

So how is Gossip Girl, a show on the CW channel, having a greater impact on the art world than Art Basel? At a recent NYC art benefit, I found myself talking to a major Chelsea gallery owner, her teenage daughter and several of her friends (all fans of the show). Though these NYC girls are all too familiar with the art world, their peers in cities across America are not. What these girls and millions across America do share is a belief that these Gossip Girl characters are the hippest trend setters on the planet.

Though we certainly do not celebrate the ridiculous excess of these teenage television characters, making art accessible is something we believe is vital in getting people into the doors of our cultural institutions, studying art history and creating art. In the past two seasons of Gossip Girl, art and the business of art has never seemed cooler and more accessible to a young audience. The show's main upper east side characters, Serena, Blair and Chuck Bass engage in bidding wars at Sotheby's, live in penthouses decorated with contemporary art, date hot young artists and casually refer to artists like Kandinsky. The New York Times recently reported that the Richard Phillips works hanging above the bed of Chuck Bass is not a one sided love affair as the artist "admits he is addicted" to the show . Meanwhile the Brooklyn based Humphries family (the show's version of the middle class) own a Brooklyn gallery and Vanessa, who is often the moral compass of the show, works as a gallery assistant.

So while the pomp and circumstance of Art Basel -- and the Miami weather -- is a welcome break from New York City, perhaps the art world should consider taking a page from Gossip Girl and wooing a new generation of art aficionados. In fact, new media (particularly Twitter) is making an impact at this year's Art Basel as many fairs, gallerists, bloggers and visitors are utilizing Twitter and text messaging (a la Gossip Girl) to send in comments that display live on Artlog.com

Gossip Girl: The Comic

We all love the Gossip Girl show and some of us even love the Gossip Girl book series by Cecily von Ziegesar. But now we have a whole new way to love the Gossip Girl characters -- in cartoon form. Yen Press is set to start publishing a manga adaptation of the best-selling book series in it's monthly magazine starting in January 2010. It's called GOSSIP GIRL: FOR YOUR EYES ONLY and it "will be an original re-imagination of the girls’ senior year focusing on the lives of Blair and Vanessa, written and illustrated by HyeKyung Baek." Yen Press says of the endeavor: “There are few series in the publishing world that have been as impactful or successful as Cecily von Ziegesar’s GOSSIP GIRL. Leighton Meester is All Over the Place

What isn't Leighton Meester doing these days? Word on the street is that the album is set to be released sometime in February or March of 2010 and then she wants to tour and do a live show (whatever that might mean.) Remember her first single from that upcoming album was "Somebody to Love" featuring Robin Thicke and the next one up to be released is called "Make It Rain" with Lil Wayne...(which will be up on this blog the moment it is released!)

And in even more exciting Leighton news, she is set to play a powerful beauty queen and budding country singer in the new movie "Love Don't Let Me Down," also starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw. Production starts in January in Nashville. Here's how Variety magazine described the Country Music Drama:

[It] revolves around a rising young singer-songwriter (Hedlund) who becomes involved with a fallen country singer, to be played by Paltrow. As they embark on a career resurrection tour with her husband and manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester), romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all.

As if she had time for anything else, Leighton will also be starring in upcoming films "The Roommate" which is a college creepy single-white-femalesque thriller and a romantic comedy with Steve Carrell called "Date Night."

Thankfully there haven't even been any rumors about any of these projects getting in the way of her GG commitments. Cause let's face it, the Upper East Side would be nothing without Miiiss Blair.

NY Times The Debarted Review: Gossip Girl Is the Jackie and You Are the Marilyn

New York Times Daily Intel bloggers never fail to deliver fabulous, poignant and sometimes brutal reviews of each new episode of Gossip Girl. (Actually, I've heard of people out there who watch the show just to then be able to understand the blog...which I guess I can't criticize if it gets them hooked on the GG). Anyway, here is an excerpt. Remember they give points and take them away based on the reality index of the episode.

Faker Than a Writers' Retreat With a Hot Tub

• Blair's houndstooth top in the first scene is about two years and a continent too late. Minus 3.
• Please, billionaires like Lily Bass don't go to co-op meetings. Rufus would have been going since the beginning, in her place. Or, like, Eric. Or Vanya. Minus 3.
• Gossip Girl says: "Looks like the roadie to success is paved with Cruel Intentions." What does that even mean?? Minus 1.
• Nate would not be so awesome about encouraging Dan to date his ex. Minus only 1, because against all odds, Nate is becoming our favorite character on this show. That Footloose contract must really have the writers nervous.
• Random Woman From the Building: "It's okay. We all sacrifice our independence for love. At first it seems totally worth it, it's just later after you've given everything up that you realize that you have nothing to offer. That's when your husband starts banging his yoga teacher." Please, that lady didn't marry whatever multimillionaire she married for love. Minus only 2, because we suspect that this lady is going to be a raging lunatic and we can't wait.
• Serena can't deal with being alone without Trip, coffee, or cable, as though those are her three essentials. Please. Surely there's a plastic handle of Bacardi in that place somewhere she can mix with some Swiss Miss. Minus 2.
• Trip: "I do care about my career, but not more than I care about Serena. I just want to be clear about that."
Maureen: "It's my personal opinion that Serena's just a phase." We highly doubt anyone would be able to deliver this understatement of the year with such a straight face, with or without that ridiculous tartan hat. Minus 1.
• Also, while Chuck would obviously have fantasies about his dad belittling him, it's unlikely that he would actually start seeing visions of him — that all of a sudden, one year to the day of his death, the ghost of Bart Bass would manifest all sunburned and mystical, like he'd been hanging out with the cast of Lost this past year, and start chattering his face off so much that Chuck was forced to scream at him to "LEAVE ME ALONE" in public like an actual crazy person. Minus 5
• An Eric and Jenny truce? We don't believe it! Gays have memories like elephants; they never forget a moist trunk or a loose tail. Minus 2.

Realer Than Moving on to "A Palate Cleanser"
• Lily invents Vanya's "Coats for Kiev" as a cover for incessantly going through her closet, and Rufus (who would obviously know) corrects her that Vanya is from Minsk, which is actually, you know, in Belarus. Plus 3.
• Wow, Rufus went from zero to the zipper cardigan really fast. He must also be on the kept-husband e-mail list, which the co-op ladies detect immediately. Plus 4.
• The outfits of the Constance mean girls whose names we refuse to remember were puzzling this episode. Each of their school uniforms was accessorized monochromatically: One was wearing all purple, one was in blue, and one was in green. We're too old to understand, but we think this must have something to do with which sex acts they're willing to perform. So Plus 5 for that.
• Serena, who is 18, thinks it's okay if "everything falls apart" and she and Trip have to "start over." Plus 2..
• Of course Trip drives a Land Rover and dresses like he's on a foxhunt when he's "relaxing." Plus 2.
• Also, of course Eric switched to a less pretty 'mo ho. The pretty ones are more threatening. Plus 2.
• D: "[Paul Hoffman is] a handsome guy, he's a sophomore, he and Vanessa have a lot in common."
N: "He's a douche." Plus 3.
• Willa is SUCH an NYU actress name. Plus 1, and Plus 3 for her performance-art piece, which she describes as a cross between Karen Finley and Daryl Hannah in Legal Eagles, and Plus 4 for Nate telling Dan, "Dude, she's a drama major. Actresses are totally crazy" and being right.
• Maureen has a kick-ass Mercedes roadster. Clearly it was Trip's prized possession, and clearly she was driving his baby to make him antsy. Well played. Plus 3.
• M: "It's a time-honored political tradition. I'm Jackie, you're Marilyn." Oh man, who wouldn't rather be Jackie? Serena, that's who. Plus 2
•• Serena. "I risked everything to be with Trip." HA. What did she risk? Her PR job? Her reputation as a non-floozy? Her career in politics? Bless. Plus 4.
• Serena walks out of the country house with her baggage and no car in sight, just planning to "find a cab" in the middle of ******* Nassau County. God, she's amazing. Plus 5.
• Trip Ted Kennedys–out on Serena? Perfect!! Plus 40, because, ah, old-money Democrats.
• We literally threw our hands in the air when Nate punched Trip. We're not sure we have ever been in such close agreement with a response by a character on this show. Plus 5. Oh, except for maybe when Nate punched his dad. That was pretty rad, too.
• Serena appears to be wearing lipstick in the hospital, which makes sense. Lily would have glossed her right up the second she woke up. Plus 1
• Blair: "I don't think you ran away because you couldn't handle death. I think it was because you couldn't handle feelings." Plus 2, because only in this world is that statement a compliment.
• We can't get enough of Maureen's ridiculous swirly tartan hat. It's the perfect accent to the evilness of her character, like a preppy, uptight suburban version of Cruella Deville's coat made of puppies. Plus 5.
• No points, but great teasers of the Jenny, Chuck, and Rufus future plotlines.

The Debarted Previews

Leighton vs. Taylor

Everyone knows that former Queen Blair and current Queen Lil J are not going to be BFFs any time soon. But recently several sources are reporting that the tension between the two continues into real life. Taylor Momsen is apparently jealous of the amount of love Leighton's music has been getting on the show. They have played the Cobra Starship track she was featured on "Good Girls Go Bad" and "Somebody to Love" during episodes of the show as well as debuting Leighton's "Somebody to Love" video. They have not featured any music by Taylor's group The Pretty Reckless and it is apparently a sore spot for Taylor. Some think Leighton's pop vibe is more in line with the show than Taylor's rock sound but the CW is saying they will support Taylor's music when the time is right. Interesting....Can you all just say a quick prayer that Blake Lively doesn't try out her singing chops any time soon?

Gossip Girl Gift Guide!

Doesn't alliteration make everything better? OK, well in honor of today being Black Friday and all, we wanted to do something to get into the shopping spirit. So here is a Gossip Girl gift guide to help you come up with the hottest presents for your loved ones this holiday season.

For the Jenny on your list, you should definitely check out Fingertip only Gloves, as rocked by Lil J at her Cotillion. Or you could be less subtle and get her a gift certificate to Sephora so she could pick out some less offensive eye makeup...although she'd probably buy more of that raccoon stuff, so maybe scratch that idea and stick with the gloves.

For the Vanessa of your group, we suggest a Weave. Her's has clearly gotten out of control this season, so she should bag the one she has and start over. And for her uber-hipster soon-to-be boyfriend, Dan, we suggest a hipster V-neck T, like this one from Urban Outfitters. If you are not sure what size, be sure to err on the small side.

For the Blair in your life, who has exquisite taste for the finer things, we say keep it simple. What about a pair of Flannel Pajamas in case Chuck ever gets out of line? And it's not like Blair would ever set foot in a Gap herself, right? You'd totally be doing her a favor.

And lord help you if you have a friend like Serena. You might want to look into the existence of Chastity Belts in modern times (maybe try e-bay?). But more realistically, If you come across a a cute ornament you get it for her to wear as a hair charm, like she wore for her graduation and on several other occasions. But we know what a Serena would really want...clothes! The requirements for a Serenafied dress are: short, tight, going out dress (to be worn in the daytime) with lots of room for cleavage. Since you probably aren't on an Upper East Side budget, check out these dresses at Forever 21.

The Constance Billard School for Girls is a fictional private, elite New York City all-girls school in the best selling Gossip Girl book series. The school is located at 93rd and Madison Avenue on the prestigious Upper East Side of Manhattan, where most of the school’s students reside. Constance Billard is based on the exclusive Nightingale-Bamford School, the alma matter of Gossip Girl’s author Cecily von Ziegesar.

Overview

The Constance Billard School for Girls enrolls seven-hundred students in between grades Kindergarten through twelfth and has fifty faculty and staff members. A large majority of the graduates apply and are accepted into Ivy League universities, as Gossip Girl says, “not applying to the Ivy Leagues is not an option, and not getting into them would be a total embarrassment.” The college advisor is Mrs. Glos, who frequently has nose-bleeds. The school has a sisterly relationship with the St. Jude’s School for Boys, where Nate Archibald attends, and Riverside Preparatory School for Boys on the Upper West Side, where Dan Humphrey and Chuck Bass attend. Though most students are from wealthy backgrounds, each grade includes a few scholarship students. Clubs include Film/Drama, French, and Art of Floral Design.

Headmistress

Mrs. McLean, or Mrs. M as called by the students, is the headmistress of Constance Billard. She is known as a lesbian to the students and has girlfriend up in Vermont named Vonda. A dedication to this girlfriend is a tattoo on Mrs. McLean’s thigh reading “Ride Me, Vonda”. Her job is to put forth the cream on the crop—send the girls off to the best marriages and the best lives— being very good at what she does. Mrs. M has no patience for losers. If she were to catch a girl acting like a loser—persistently calling in sick or doing poorly on the SATs—she will hire shrinks, counselors, and tutors, making sure the student got the personal attention she needed to get good grades, high test scores, and a warm welcome to the college of her choice. Her favorite saying is 'when you assume out ofyou make an ass out of you and me.

Punishment

Mrs. McLean doesn’t tolerate meanness, since Constance is supposed to be a school free of cliques and prejudice of any sort. The slightest slander of one girl about another is punished with a day in isolation and a seriously difficult essay assignment, which were rarely necessary. Mrs. M is blissfully ignorant of what goes on in the school.

Notable Students

The Constance Billard School for Girls is a breeding ground for the children of VIPs, executives, business magnates, media moguls, and the prominent members of the Upper East Side. Some of these children include Blair Waldorf, a socialite who’s the daughter of hostess Eleanor Waldorf Rose and highly successful lawyer Harold Waldorf, Esquire. She went on to matriculate to Yale University. Not to mention Serena van der Woodsen, a socialite who is a model turned actress and heiress to a Dutch shipping firm her family has run since the 1700's. She chose not to attend college so she could pursue her acting career, despite being accepted into several Ivy Leagues intitutions and various other prestigious universities. An example of scholarship student is Vanessa Abrams, a budding film maker who matriculated to NYU Film School. Jenny Humphrey, was also is a scholarship student and an aspiring artist and writer, was kicked out of Constance Billard during her freshman year. Kati Farkas and Isabel Coates are two alumna socialites who are now attending Rollins College, Isabel turned down Princeton University to be with her best friend Kati. Baby Carlyle and Avery Carlyle will attend Constance Billard when their family moves into the penthouse once owned by the Waldorfs.

Actor Desmond Harrington revealed that he's set to return as troublemaker Jack Bass sometime this season on Gossip Girl.
"I will be back this year," says Harrington. "I think it's episode 15 or 16 where I show back up. It's fun playing Uncle Jack."
So what trouble will Uncle Jack be brewing this time around? What could possibly live up to hooking up with Blair on New Year's Eve, attacking Lily Bass, and trying to steal the company out from under Chuck?
Harrington doesn't know the details about his storyline yet, but he does know this:
"I think, if anything, I am there to screw that kid's [Chuck's] life up basically," Harrington says. "I think he might be, out of all the most evil characters the show has ever had on it, the most evil character. He's evil."

Gossip Girl Spoiler
Spotted: Three Upper East Siders in a menage a trois that is sure to be the talk of the town. Blogs are abuzz with the news, first reported by EW's Michael Ausiello, that three major characters are going to get it on during -- when else? -- November sweeps. "Gossip Girl" sources are mum on who will be involved in the steamy sack session -- so you'll just have to wait until the episode airs Nov. 9 to find out.

It turns out that the sweet-seeming Bree Buckley isn't all she's cracked up to be by Nate, nor was she all talk when she threatened Carter Baizen two weeks ago, who has some mysterious connection to the Buckley family. Could Bree just be using Nate to exact her revenge? E! Online reports:

"Bree's not exactly a paragon of sweetness and light. Her intentions are not as pure as we've been led to believe. The redheaded Gossip girl mostly just wants revenge on Carter, and she wants it bad. Better luck next time, Nate."

Bree isn't the only bad love interest in the bunch. It looks like Jenny's new beau, played by Kevin Zegers, is going to do damage... and her absolute power won't be the only thing corrupting Constance's new Queen Bee:

"Damien (Kevin Zegers) is bad news. If you like raccoon-eyed Little J, you're in luck, because sources tell us Damien's going to bring Jenny 'to a dark place.' Break out the mascara and eyeliner, Jenny."

Dan may have upgraded from psychotic Georgina to the sweet celebrity Olivia, but that doesn't mean his life is going to get any easier! As we saw in the promo for next Monday's episode, "Rufus Getting Married," Georgina is going to do whatever she can to break up Lonely Boy and Movie Star Girl. But for now, judging from photos coming off the Gossip Girl set this week, the Dan-Olivia love seems to be alive and well...

Rebecca: Spill it! Who's the dead father who's coming back?
Nope. It's actually Bart Bass of Gossip Girl. How crazytown is that?! A source tells me that Robert John Burke (the senior Basshole) will be returning to the show in December, just in time to make it a very special Gossip Girl Christmas. P.S. When I hinted that "two blondes will be atwitter" I was referring to Lily Rhodes van der Woodsen Bass Humphrey and Gossip Girl herself (Kristen Bell), who will certainly Twitter the news!—but of course Serena also would count. Whaddya think of that twist?

Well, even though it is true that John Robert Burke (Bart Bass) will be coming back to Gossip Girl, my speculation that Bart might actually be alive isnot true. "He'll be a ghost," one source tells me. But, get this—Spoiler alert!—that doesn't mean that Chuck doesn't have a "dead" parent who might not be so dead after all! "There's a huge storyline later this season that is going to blow you away," promises my source. "And it involves Chuck, Jack Bass and Chuck's mother." Also making a comeback? Serena's father. "We will see him this season," says the source. "But he hasn't been cast yet." Suggestions? Whoever it is, he's going to bring with him another major storyline arc and mucho trouble for Rufus Humphrey. Also in the love department, thanks to Chuck's newfound family dramarama, you can expect Chuck and Blair to heat up again. And for you Olivia (Hilary Duff) haters, you'll be happy to hear that she is off the series for good, leaving Dan all by his wonesome to get together with longtime special friend (with threesome benefits) Vanessa. I'm also told that the long-held feelings Nate has had for Serena (don't forget the triangle drama that started off the series) will add some pretty deep emotion to their upcoming pairing.

Question: Who was the woman standing over Bart's grave on Gossip Girl? Was it Chuck's mom?
Ausiello: First off, the grave stalker has a name, and it's Laura Harring (The Shield). Second, yes, she will reveal herself to be the Bass family matriarch when GG returns in March. Something about this makes my impostor antennae go up, though. Call me a ***** for stunt casting, but if and when Chuck's mum returned from the dead, I always imagined producers would go for a big name. You know, like Michelle Forbes. Who's with me?

Maurice in Pittsburgh: What the what? I just read Josh Schwartz's quote that Jenny and Chuck have something coming up on Gossip Girl. Please tell me Little J is not coming between Blair and Chuck. I'll die!
Your life is spared. An inside source tells me that Jenny and Chuck don't really have any big storylines together this season, so I'm assuming Josh meant Jenny will have a big storyline and Chuck will have a big storyline, but they are not the same storyline. Chuck's story involves the possible surprise return of his believed-to-be-dead mother (and Jack Bass), and Jenny's involves another couple she comes between...guesses? Wanda Two Saints: Kristin, are you really not going to tell us who Jenny will be interfering with? That's low, even for you!
Only because I like old friends with bad glasses, I will reveal that Jenny is going to "get in between Nate and Serena," according to my rock-solid Gossip Girl source. We likey? We hatey? I'm thinking more of the latter...

Candy in Hawaii: Will Jenny get her knight in shining Armani? I've waited so long for Nate and Jenny to happen! Please, please tell me they will be a couple. I want them as my Christmas present!
Here's what I can tell you. According to my source: "Jenny definitely will try to steal Nate away" later this season, after Nate and Serena are more of a solidified couple. However, in what has been written so far, I'm told "Nate is resisting." That said, it certainly seems as though Jenny has fully embraced the dark side of her Machiavellian ways (will she be worse than Blair ever was?) because according to my mole, the whole Nate stealing is "going to be pretty underhanded by Jenny. Serena won't really suspect it for a bit." So let me get this straight: Little J has screwed over her stepbrother/former BFF and now her stepsister too?! Talk about a character 180 from the first season! Do we have a new Big Bad on the Upper East Side? Are producers trying to make us not like her? Thoughts? Marlene in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: Some Gossip Girl news please! Anything big coming up? Deaths? Hookups? Marriages?
Dorota is getting married! Pretty sweet, no? And now that two people very close to Blair have gotten hitched lately (first mom, now Dorota), she has to be next right? OK, probably not. But a girl can dream.
