REVERSALS OF FORTUNE
Welcome Back Gossip Girls and Boys! We start out this year in NYC with...Oh No! Chuck Bass in a bar, being led away but a hot blonde. Maybe Chuck Bass is still Chuck Bass? Even despite his end-of-last-season declaration of love to Blair?

Back in East Hampton, check out Jenny loving her new Hamptons gig, now that her dad is marrying Lily, she too gets to live the life of the Upper East Side rich and famous. Serena apparently enlisted Lil J and Eric to help her lie to her family (and Dan) on her behalf about her whereabouts this summer. Serena taking a Vow of Silence at an Ashram, though? Is that the best they could come up with?

Cut to Nate Archibald…surprisingly not with either Vanessa or a backpack, but rather making out in a helicopter with a hot new red headed stranger. Once they find out who the other one is (each from rival extremely rich and powerful families) they part ways, in with their own black car with driver.

Back to Chuck in the bar….now almost kinda making out with that blond girl Ashley. But never fear, Blair bursts in the room and ******* out the blond with an amazing Blair tirade, and then starts making out with Chuck herself. Interesting…

Back at chez VDW-Humphrey, Dan catches a glimpse of OK magazine and realizes that S has been partying all summer long. Just then Serena herself pulls up, hounded by a huge crowd of Paparazzi. After breakfast, Dan confronts Serena about her lie, and she pretty much blows him off.

Chuck convinces Nate to take Bree Buckley (the girl from the helicopter) out again, despite their family rivalries. Nate’s family is already giving him the silent treatment about quitting his job in the mayor’s office. Later in the same convo (and another between BFFs S and B) we learn that Chuck and Blair are determined to keep their relationship interesting even after the honeymoon period is over, so they have a little game they like to play: Chuck pretends to be the cheating bastard and Blair pretends to be the scorned woman and gets to humiliate the “other woman”. Both Nate and Serena (separately) think this is a bad idea, but Blair and Chuck don’t seem to want to hear it. Later its clear that B is having second thoughts about the idea.

So, what was Vanessa doing all summer if she wasn’t back together with Nate, you ask? Apparently they hooked up one night in Prague, but it was no big deal. She spent a lot of the summer back in NYC, at her new favorite coffee house hangout and she is interested in a new boy: Scott. She busts Dan for being all Upper East Side now, and watches him get into a limo after he claimed to be taking the subway. As if we didn’t already get it, Vanessa’s Scott is, in fact, the Rufus/Lily love child. He seems all too interested in Dan and his family and convinces Vanessa to show up at the Vanderbilt Charity Polo Match, where of course, everyone will be.

Serena runs in to Carter Brazen on the street and they have an short but intense exchange where he tells her she can’t avoid him forever. To end the convo, she unties the straps of her dress and pretends like its falling off, and the Paps swarm around her as predicted, and makes her get-away.

Chuck and Blair go wait outside a modeling agency to pick out their next victim to play the part of the other woman in their little game when Chuck realizes that Blair is not as into it as she used to be. They decide that it was great for the summer, but now that summer’s over, they should stop.

Rufus finds out about Serena’s summer of fun with a little accidental help from Jenny and Eric. Later, we find out that Cece is not doing well health-wise and Lily is away helping her. That’s why Rufus was in charge of all the kids this summer in the Hamptons. When Rufus and Dan confront Serena, she tells them she is done partying, and it was no big deal. Privately, she tells Dan that she traveled with Carter Brazen in the beginning of the summer, but that now he is stalking her and she is worried what he will do. Ever the hero, Dan, in an unlikely turn of events, calls Blair.

At the Polo game, Nate introduces Bree to his grandfather (clearly just to make him mad) and then returns the key to the car he bought for him. She later tells him that although normally she wouldn’t mind being used to piss of grandpa, she needs to keep her relationship with Nate low-profile because her family isn’t speaking to her either and she is trying to change that. Nate is totally fine with this. Later his grandpa comes up to them and makes nice, but as soon as they leave he gets on the phone, telling someone he now knows how to get back at the Buckleys.

Dan and Blair find Carter and serve him with a restraining order against him for Blair (and “until further notice” B will be right by Serena’s side). Just then Serena walks up and it is clear that he was never stalking her, although exactly what is going on remains to be seen.

Serena then gets on a horse and takes off galloping away from the Polo match. Carter follows her and when he tells her he knows she is acting out because her dad didn’t want to see her this summer, they end up making out. Maybe Carter isn’t such a bad guy after all.

Chuck’s wandering eye reinforces that he and Blair are no longer playing the game. Later, when B finds out that Chuck left the Polo match with a stunning blonde, she is not pleased. She rushes all the way home and accuses Chuck of stashing Alexandra somewhere, which he hasn’t done. She tells him she is worried they need games to be interesting, but he convinces her that is not the case. So far so good for our favorite couple ever!

Scott finds a way to meet Rufus (and introduce himself as V’s date of course). Later Dan and Vanessa have it out about him being rich and her judging him for it, etc. etc. After the match, Scott plays the good listener to Vanessa, and they end up kissing.

So, in the last few minutes of the show, we have Nate and Bree kissing, Chuck and Blair playing a more Blair like role play game, Vanessa unknowingly making out with Dan’s half brother, Serena calling her dad and saying she is not going to stop until she gets his attention, Rufus buying the rights to all of the photos of Serena, and then Serena making sure the photos of her from the Polo match run in Europe and Asia so her father will be sure to see them.

Yay for Season 3! Xoxo.
