The Backstory | Leighton Meester
By Horacio Silva, New York Times Mag.
This weekend’s Times magazine features a fashion layout with Leighton Meester, the former child model turned actress who is best known for playing the spoiled Upper East Side princess Blair Waldorf on “Gossip Girl.” I caught up for breakfast with the 23-year-old Meester, who showed up wearing a mannish Ruth Reichl-meets-Annie Hall disguise, including a hat and respectable spectacles.
I had lunch with Jason Wu recently, who told me you were his date to an event. This is how rumors start.

He’s such a sweetheart. We actually went to Anna Wintour’s house for dinner. It was very cool and quite the fashion baptism by fire. I’d say. It’s amazing how popular he’s become. Every few minutes people kept coming up to the table to say hello to him — mostly to congratulate him on his work with Michelle Obama. Does that happen to you much? No, no one really congratulates me on my work with Michelle Obama. [Laughs.] People are pretty respectful for the most part. I went to a Britney Spears concert recently and spent the first part trying to shield myself because I thought it would be madness, but the truth is that everyone was very cool and left me alone. But it really depends on where I am. What about the paparazzi? Do they stalk you to the point that you have to wear full makeup when you take out the trash? I would never do that! Take out the trash, I mean. [Laughs.] You know, I never really had a problem with them but recently there have been a couple of incidents that have made me say, “What?” I was getting in a car after an event — where I had been photographed all night, by the way — and I was done posing and just wanted to go home. When I refused to take any more pictures, one of the photographers outside actually said, “We know where you live.” That was creepy. But you know they don’t bother me on a daily basis. I can pretty much go anywhere. Your character, Blair, is very carnal and knowing for an 18-year-old. Were you a precocious teen? I actually find Blair naïve. I look at young girls like her who are obsessed with guys and with being the most popular and the prettiest, and I just want to shake them. Maybe you just grow up a little faster when you’re a young performer, but I was definitely never like that. To what extent has your personal style influenced what Blair wears on the show? Not at all. If anything, it’s the opposite. Her style is a little expensive for my taste but it loudly communicates that she is who she is and that she does what she does. I find that admirable. And she’s always dressed appropriately, which I can’t always say about myself. Describe the look that your character has popularized. It’s kind of this updated Japanese schoolgirl look. Every other outfit is larger than life — even when it’s prim and proper — and heavily accessorized. I wear ties, bows, colored tights, heels and stuff that you could never get away with at school. But I think that the most important part of Blair’s look is her
headband, which is like her crown. The references on the show are surprisingly mature, from “Berlin Alexanderplatz” to Sarkozy’s being a bad kisser and Kirsten Dunst’s stint in rehab. It’s definitely a crash course in pop culture and global affairs. We just mentioned Madoff the other day. But remember, we’re talking about the kind of privileged kids who by age 10 already have 12 stamps in their passport. They’re very wordly. Your character graduates from high school next season. What’s going to happen to your look? It’s yet to be decided, but I’m definitely going to college — to N.Y.U. — and not wearing any more school uniforms. Thank god we’re not pretending we all get held back and just continue with high school like all those other high school shows. I guess I’ll wear magnificent clothes every day that don’t have anything to do with school. You are working on a CD. What kind of music is it and can we expect a Lady Gaga makeover? Absolutely. I’m determined to no longer wear pants. The music is electric pop, with a little bit of rock element to it. It’s not like bubble gum — it’s actually very edgy. You’re also working on a couple of movies, no? Well, first I’m going on a much-deserved vacation. Then I’m starting work on a comedy called “Date Night,” with Steve Carell and Tina Fey. I play the babysitter and they go out for a date one night and everything goes awry. After that I’m starring in this crazy movie called “The Roommate,” which is directed by Christian Christiansen and is sort of a retelling of “Single White Female.” I’m the emotionally detached narcissist, but it’s early days and I still don’t know who’s playing the psycho opposite me. As long as it’s not Miley Cyrus. Lastly, I have to ask about a story that follows you everywhere. When it was revealed in the tabloids that your parents had been in jail for drugs when you were born, did you regret being on a show about gossip? This is the type of thing that you can’t be too sensitive about — it’s not like I did anything that’s worth talking about. I love my parents very much, but people either continue or break the patterns of what their life should be and I just want to completely break whatever patterns would lead me to the same life choices that they made.
No Doubt Go '80s With New Cover, 'Gossip Girl' Cameofrom MTV By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue
It's no secret that No Doubt have a thing for the '80s. In 2003, they released a cover of Talk Talk's 1984 hit "It's My Life," which earned them a Grammy nom. Then, early Wednesday morning (April 8), Ryan Seacrest posted a link to yet another cover, this one of Adam & the Ants' 1981 track "Stand and Deliver," which the band will perform on the May 11 episode of "Gossip Girl." But here's the thing: Last week, MTV Radio spoke to "GG" executive producer Josh Schwartz, who filled us in on some details about the episode. In keeping with the spirit of No Doubt's newest cover, they're heading straight back to the '80s.
"As you know, they're reuniting, they're going on tour, and they wanted to do a TV appearance and reached out to us on 'Gossip Girl,' " Schwartz said. "And then we came back and asked them, 'What about being an '80s band?' So they came on as 'Snow Doubt' and they did a cover of Adam & the Ants' 'Stand and Deliver.' It was amazing." Schwartz said the May 11 episode will serve as the jump-off point for the much-discussed "Gossip Girl" spin-off, which focuses on the wild, rock-and-roll youth of Serena van der Woodsen's mom, Lily — which, of course, explains the cameo.
"It's about Serena's mom Lily growing up in L.A. in the '80s. And the pilot will air as a series of flashbacks inside the May 11 episode of 'Gossip Girl,' " Schwartz said. "We've shot it all, and it all looks great."

Here is one of the articles:
It’s been a heart-wrenching month for fans of the CW Network’s sexily subversive drama Gossip Girl while TV’s hottest show took a brief hiatus. But now Blair, Serena, Chuck Bass and Co. are back — and on the cover of
the new issue of Rolling Stone. To get the dirt on what it’s like starring as beautiful young people in New York while being beautiful young people in New York, Jason Gay hung out with the cast on set and after hours, tagging along to their favorite drinking haunts — where the beverage of choice is the potent Golden Monkey — and catching the action as the show filmed on the streets of the Big Apple. (Get up close and personal with the crew for yourself with our exclusive footage from Terry Richardson’s steamy shoot, above, plus
exclusive photos from the session.) “The outdoor sets were pretty fun, because the fans come out,” Gay says. “There were many kids from local private schools, foreign tourists and tons of paparazzi. It’s very strange to see a mob of paparazzi photograph Blake and Leighton in character as they film an outdoor scene. It’s as if the reality of the show exists behind two lenses — in real time and TV time. All the actors enjoy the outside stuff because of the fans, too. It’s like playing on stage or something. More energy, more excitement and the sense that anything could happen. And sometimes it does. There is no such thing as a closed set in NYC!”
Despite barely scraping together 3 million viewers a week, the show has become the most talked-about, culturally relevant series on television. “It’s not a conventional TV hit in terms of viewership. Its numbers are low and it loses to stuff like
The Secret Life of the American Teenager, a far more wholesome show that runs on cable,” Gay says. “But in terms of having a ‘moment,’ however you want to define it,
GG definitely is having one. It will be very interesting to see if the show grows, or remains a clubby, small hit. Teen shows seldom have long runs — and I don’t get the feeling this will turn into
ER. But it seems to be here to stay as long as the principals involved want to keep doing it.”
Part of the show’s appeal is its authenticity. “The show is sharp and connected to modern life, references, music and so on. Gossip Girl doesn’t feel like something that got drummed up in some network focus group by 55-year-old white dudes,” Gay explains. “No one’s going to accuse
Gossip Girl of being
The Wire or
Mad Men, but if you roll with the fantasy/absurdity, it’s fun to watch, from the infighting to the insane clothes and snappy dialogue.”
Right now, the stars who bring those tart lines to life — Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Ed Westwick, Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley — somehow haven’t let fame go to their heads, according to Gay. “They’ve all reached the point where they’re in the public eye, but they’re not rolling around in blacked-out SUVs or being chased around like Madonna. A lot of them take the subway and they still complain about the price of rents and monthly car parking,” Gay reveals. “They’re in a nice place in their careers. They’re now recognizable enough to get interest for other things, but not so recognizable that daily life is a drag.”
Though he’s now a Gossip guru, Gay admits, “I didn’t jump on the bandwagon immediately. But by the end of the first season, I was getting so annoyed with the fuss I had to check it out.” So what’s his favorite
Gossip Girl moment? “The scene in the ‘Non-Judging Breakfast Club’ episode where Blair, Chuck and Nate rally behind Serena after she confesses about her wild night with Georgina. Nate and Blair then confess regrettable things they’ve done, and when Blair asks Chuck to contribute, he just says, ‘I’m Chuck Bass,’ ” Gay says. “It’s the kind of thing that if you watched the show for the first time, it would mean nothing to do you, but if you’re a fan, you’re dying. I think that’s one of the shrewder things about
Gossip Girl — it does reward its loyal viewers.” For much more on
Gossip Girl, including whether stars Leighton Meester and Blake Lively are really friends and the lowdown on partying with the Gossip Guys, check out the new issue of

Some brief Gossip Girl rumors (including what would have been a major one deunked) and news courtesy of
TV Guide...Q: What does Season Two have in store for Gossip Girl's Jenny and Chuck? I heard they might get together.
A: In the name of American Apparel, bite your tongue! Jenny Humphrey will be too busy toiling away at a dress form anyway, as Season 2 fleshes out her fashion-related ambitions, which may or may not include Blair's mom. The Basshole, on the other hand, will avenge the loss of the Victrola — that "classy" burlesque club in which he wanted his dad to invest — by turning his sights on an equally seedy Brooklyn venue, and with help from a very surprising ally

up 10 percentamong the key 18-34 demographic.

With the second season premiere, "Summer Kind Of Wonderful,"Gossip Girllived up to all the hype and served as a strong lead-in forOne Tree Hill(3.1 million, 1.6/4, 2.0), which also was up about the same amount. The numbers show the network hasn't been stymied by a rerun-stuffed summer and set the stage for the big premiere of

Chace Crawford Is A Very Good Kisser
Posted on August 28th, 2008
So says Madchen Amick. The actress, who plays Nate Archibald’s mature, beautiful love interest on Gossip Girl, makes out with the handsome 23-year-old - and certainly causes plenty of drama in Monday's season premiere, "Summer Kind of Wonderful." Luckily, she’s not above kissing and telling. “Chace is a very good kisser,” Amick, 37, says. “If anyone gets the opportunity to kiss him ... he will not disappoint.” It appears not, at least from the make-out scene in question.
The Season 2 premiere of Gossip Girl catches up with Nate and pals Serena (Blake Lively), Blair (Leighton Meester), Chuck (Ed Westwick), Dan (Penn Badgley) and Jenny (Taylor Momsen), at the end of the summer. “[Nate] has been keeping busy having an affair with an older
married woman,” Amick explains. “Things continue [with Nate], but she gets very intertwined with the other characters and there’s a lot that I’m not supposed to say.” However, of her story arc, which she says will last four episodes, Madchen Amick will say that “she causes a lot of trouble.” The actress, who has two teenagers, says her kids got to visit her on the set, but she didn’t let them watch her maul Crawford. “That just would be completely wrong,” she says, though she's not against them seeing the racy — and controversial — show on TV. “They’re very savvy. They’ve seen me do stuff in the past. They’ve seen me be a killer,” she says of her 15-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son. “They know it’s all make-believe. It’s not going to affect them.” As for Chace's younger Gossip Girl cast mates, Amick says she’s impressed at how they’re handling all the attention. “Everywhere these people go, when they’re filming or going home or going to dinner or whatever, there are masses of fans following them [and] huge crowds of paparazzi,” says Amick, who says she’s tried to stay out of the spotlight since starring in the eerie TV classic Twin Peaks in the early ’90s, when she was a teenager. “I really don’t envy the kids because they’re right in the middle of it." “But they seem to be very mature, savvy, young actors. They don’t seem to be angry about it and they don’t seem to have huge egos because of it either. I don’t know where they found this group, but they all seem to have level heads.”
Here was Blake Lively on set of Gossip Girl in New York on Monday - which was, indeed, the day of her 21st birthday.
As you can see, her birthday outfit of choice was jeans and a colourful print top - which she accessorised with a long beaded necklace, and her dog Penny.
Prints are going to be big this autumn/winter - whether they're bright and bold or delicate and muted - so if you want to copy Blake's look, just check out
