Impact of Gossip Girl is Wide-Ranging Posted on July 31st, 2008
With its impossibly good-looking cast, candy-colored designer fashion and its racy, provocative ads, it'd be easy to dismiss Gossip Girl as just another sexed-up, youth-oriented product right off the TV assembly line. There are certainly similarities with predecessors such as Beverly Hills: 90210. Gossip Girl is also set in an affluent area, and features an ensemble of archetypal characters like a social outcast and pretty-boy rebel with great hair. Its female leads, Blake Lively, who plays reformed bad girl Serena van der Woodsen, and Leighton Meester, who plays conniving, catty socialite Blair Waldorf, even bear a strong resemblance - in both looks and character - to Jennie Garth's Kelly Taylor and Shannen Doherty's Brenda Walsh. But Gossip Girl represents a distinct step beyond 90210 and the teen dramas before it, starting with the show's sophisticated point of view. Its rarefied world of youthful excess and angst is observed through the eyes of a mysterious blogger, the unseen yet ubiquitous Gossip Girl. The show deftly intertwines irony with authenticity, poking fun at itself while commenting on the voyeurism and sensationalism of modern culture. - Visually, its depiction of New York City satisfies every last urban fantasy, and the city can't help but love it back.
- The New York Times has even called trend-setting Gossip Girl fashion influential to the country's retail economy.
- Moreover, New York magazine went so far as to call it "the greatest teen drama of all time" in a recent cover story.
- And in the final measure of its success, the CW resurrected 90210 itself thanks to Gossip Girl's popularity.
The show, said Gossip Girl co-creator, writer and executive producer Stephanie Savage, "is a story, but it's also a platform for ideas. I think people like the Gossip Girl connection. The idea of people watching and talking about each other is something that's very real to their lives." Continue reading in the Houston Chronicle ...

Chace Crawford & Ed Westwick: Best Friends!
Posted on July 30th, 2008
Nate Archibald and Chuck Bass play best friends on Gossip Girl. It's only fitting, then, that co-stars, roommates and pals Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick are totally thisclose in real life as well! The twosome showed up at a recent show by British pop stars The Ting Tings in New York, and the Daily News reports that they're inseparable.

"They were never more than a foot apart. It was freaky. If one moved two feet to the left, so did the other," said a fellow concert-goer. The duo also chose to ignore the hordes of flirty girls trying to get their attention, says the spy: "They were only interested in each other." Aww. Best buds. So cute!

Penn Badgley can act, but can he model? Supermodels watch your backs, because the answer seems to be yes.
In this exclusive peek at the outtakes of a recent photo shoot to promote Proximity body spray by AXE the Gossip Girl star turned on his charm.
Badgley, posing for an insert in the August issue of GQ magazine, arrived at the Eagle Rock, Los Angeles location wearing baggy jeans, a T-shirt and a plaid shirt – but quickly changed into a succession of suits and sports jackets that fit in with the retro-70s set on the shoot, which was designed by GQ.
The star had no trouble getting into character. When he was asked to vault a wall, Badgley sprung into action. And he looked good doing it, according to an insider who said the actor looked "extremely buff" on set

Thoughts on the real life Blair-Carter pairing?
Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford has revealed he hates stripping off for the camera - and is willing to use his character to justify it. Chace told OK magazine recently that he dislikes his looks distracting from his acting skills so spoke out when he felt the show’s producers were trying to get him nude for no good reason: “There was an episode where we were crashed out on the sofa after a big night out and they wanted me to wake up in my boxers, so I argued with them about it. “I mean, first of all, who gets wasted with their buddy, and smokes weed and then strips down to their boxers before they pass out on the couch?! “No one does that. Why am I naked on my buddy’s couch? It was weird so I fought it.”

Blake Lively Not So Happy Gossip Girl beauty Blake Lively graces three magazine covers this month - Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan and Seventeen. But according to the New York Posts, her Gossip Girl reps only liked two of the three - Vanity Fair and Cosmopolitan. "Her camp is not thrilled about her Seventeen cover," said one source. "Her rep felt the Seventeen photo looked nothing like Blake."
Blake Lively's flack continued with another source quoted by the newspaper saying that she was exactly "over the moon" about the Seventeen shot herself. We're curious what you think about it, though ...
Blake Lively on Fame, Relationships, Sex Tapes
Blake Lively says she's noParis Hilton. Thank goodness. "I once heard someone say that I'm similar to Paris Hilton - since I have a dog and blonde hair, that must mean we're alike," Lively tells Seventeen in its new August issue, to be released July 8. "It's a dumb thing to say. I dont think that makes Paris and me similar ... I don't go to clubs, I don't party, I don't dance on tables, and I don't like sex tapes." Amen. And unlike her Gossip Girl alter ego Serena, Blake Lively's real life relationship with co-star Penn Badgley is remarkably scandal free.
 |
"Penn does these silly dance moves, and he's very witty and quick, so it's fun to have sharp banter with him," she says. Asked how they fell for each other, Blake Lively replied: "When you're saying these words that people are making you say to one another, nothing about it is real or genuine. So if two people connect outside their characters, then that's how they get together." Lively does fess up to one thing she has in common with Gossip Girl's Serena van der Woodsen - she's very passionate. "When I care about somebody, whether it's my best friend or somebody who I would date, I give them all of my heart," says Blake, the youngest of five children from Burbank, California. "I've just been so loved throughout my life, and I'm used to really loving people and trusting them back."
As for how the rest of the Gossip Girl gang gets along? “Everyone is really funny and has such strange things that they do," Lively says. "Like, Leighton Meester, she does amazing voice impressions, and she can impersonate anyone’s face." "Chace Crawford does an amazing impression of Scott Stapp from Creed. Ed Westwick is always singing," Lively adds. "Taylor Momsen is just so adorable, I just want to bake her a cupcake!" Leighton Meester Gets Lucky

Taylor Momsen Lands Modeling Contract
Posted at June 24th, 2008
Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl has signed with IMG models. This makes her one of the youngest on the roster, as Taylor is 14 - 14! There’s no denying that Taylor Momsen has model looks and model height, at 5-foot-10, but it’s interesting to note IMG’s scooping her up so quickly, since she’s yet to score any big campaigns or covers.
Taylor Momsen on the set of Gossip Girl this week.
The girl who plays Jenny Humphrey on Gossip Girl is sure to see some big modeling gigs roll in whilst repped by this agency. Expect a big Teen Vogue spread soon, and also some sort of Neutrogena / Clinique / Lip Smackers partnership, unless she sails straight past the Dooney and Bourke market and scores Gap ads, that is. Congrats to Taylor Momsen on her modeling contract!

Gossip on Boys of ‘Gossip Girl’
June 26th, 2008

Both the NY Post and the NY Daily News wanted to share a juicy piece of info on Chace Crawford and co-star/room mate/friend Ed Westwick. According to them, reliable sources have revealed that the two boys are in a relationship and not trying to hide it, at least on set. Apparently, they were recently seen kissing, open-mouthed on set and not trying to hide it very much. Oh the world of Gossip! And even if they are gay, who cares? Sounds to me that the show needs publicity for season 2.

The OC' producer joins 'Gossip Girl'
Saturday, June 21 2008,
John Stephens has been hired as an executive producer on Gossip Girl.
Stephens was approached by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the show's existing executive producers, having previously worked with them on The OC.
"I was a big fan of Gossip Girl - probably embarrassingly big for a 36-year-old man - so that, and the prospect of working with Stephanie and Josh again, meant I probably would have worked on the show for free," said Stephens. "It was a real bonus when they offered to pay me."
Stephens will also develop new shows for Gossip producer Warner Brothers Television under the deal.
