Gossip Girl Hair Affair: Taylor Momsen
Posted on August 27th, 2008
Yesterday, we told you how to emulate the gorgeous hairstyle of Gossip Girl starlet Blake Lively. Today, we're taking a look at the hair of another cast member - Taylor Momsen - and some of the variations she's shown of late. Gossip Girl's "It Girl" and youngest actress (she's 15!) went from pretty to punk for the show's second-season premiere party in N.Y.C., swapping soft curls and subdued liner for stick-straight hair and sparkling shadow... Which hairstyle looks best on Taylor Momsen?

Meet the Man Behind Gossip Girl's Closet Have you ever wondered who the lucky person is that gets to decide what the Gossip Girl gang gets to wear each week? It's costume stylist Eric Daman, who also once assisted Patricia Field on the set of
Sex and the City. He recently stepped out from the background and chatted with WWD about his enviable job. Daman started out as a buyer at a boutique in Paris and went on to be an overnight model discovered by photographer Steven Meisel (his first modeling job was with Kate Moss). He eventually followed his dream of styling, and what he has done with
Gossip Girl is a fashion phenomenon. The proof is in the pictures. Here are the highlights from his interview:
- Eric on whether it’s more important for characters to look approachable or aspirational: It should be a little bit of both. I always make sure I mix some of the higher-end looks with something from a less expensive brand. I use stuff from Forever 21 and H&M all the time. You will always see someone wearing a $5,000 dress with a pair of Nine West shoes. That is how people dress today anyway.
- So, do the actors have a say in how their characters dress? I’m not a fashion Nazi. Blake [Lively] and Leighton [Meester] love to give their input, but they understand that I am there to help them create and develop their characters.
- Naturally, the Gossip Girls' individual styles have developed dramatically. It’s funny because they came into this as these fashion-naïve kids from LA who moved to New York in order to portray these true New Yorkers. They are like New Yorkers now — real, fashionable New Yorkers.
- Eric's thoughts on doing his own apparel line? I’ve thought about this a lot, actually. I would want to do a mass line, like something for Kohl’s, Target, Charlotte Russe. Then I would like to do a higher-end, capsule collection for a store like Bendel’s or Barneys. Again, it’s all about accessible fashion and mixing it up.
'Gossip Girl' Clothes Garnering Attention From Fans Of All Ages“I bet Serena will wear a lot of chunky jewelry because she always wears those simple tees with a pair of skinny jeans and boots,” predicts Jessica Rowe, 19, from Rosedale, N.Y., of the show's take on this fall's trends.
While many television shows like “Sex and the City” have captured the hearts of fashion's In crowd in the past, none have done so with the impact on the teen set and its emerging buying influence as “Gossip Girl” has, says Gloria Baume, the fashion director of Teen Vogue.
The soap, which starts its second season Sept. 1, has become known more for its fashion than scripted drama, and the styles worn by its hot young stars are influencing women of all ages.
“Truthfully, that generation — the 14- to 18-year-olds — have kind of taken over,” Baume says. “It's all about them. The consumer trends, the music, anywhere from the general trends on the street, really gets translated into what women are wearing.”
So how can a show for and about teenagers affect what a 30-year-old woman wears?
For a fan like Rowe, checking out the clothes online after each show is a must, even though she's no longer in high school; she's an international studies major at Pepperdine University. She loves the style of Blair Waldorf, played by Leighton Meester, but admits she's more of a Serena Van Der Woodsen (Blake Lively) when it comes to her own wardrobe.
“Something about it has really captured people's imaginations,” says Keith Carollo, the buyer for online retailer fredflare.com. “I'm pretty confident that designers are looking at it. It's like, they're young, beautiful and rich. That's totally what those designers are designing for.”
Baume agrees that the show's influence has broadened past its designated audience, affecting not just stylish women but designers like Alex Wang and Chanel, where Karl Lagerfeld's recent resort runway show featured “a lot of denim, high waisted denim, and it had the influence of this super chic young girl, Upper East Side, that is very elite and privileged.”
The show's costume designer, Eric Daman, also sees his work influencing retail.
“I just saw a Zara window that is totally imitating Chuck Bass's looks from upcoming episodes that have been previewed on the Web,” Daman says via e-mail, busy after styling the “Gossip Girl”-inspired windows recently unveiled at Henri Bendel.
For the second season, Daman says he was inspired by art and film.
“Blair is moving in a very Art Deco feel, mirroring the paintings of Tamara de Lempicka,” Daman says, referring to the Polish painter. “And Serena feels like a Klimt to me; Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) as a young Sean Connery circa Hitchcock's ‘Marni.'”
Want a "Gossip Girl''-styled wardrobe for fall and you don't know where to start?
A stylish back-to-school wardrobe needn't break the bank. Gloria Baume, Teen Vogue's fashion director, thinks crafty teens can find a lot for $100 to $250.
Baume suggests mixing preowned items with pieces picked up at mass retailers like Forever21, which offer cheap version of party dresses often seen on "Gossip Girl.''
"If you do a little vintage, do a little H&M, do a little Target, especially there's the new Richard Chai collection right now,'' she says of the retailer's latest designer collaboration. "There's a lot of places out there to buy great things at a budget.''
Here are some other tips on getting the look:
THE VIBE:"I think one of the things I love about 'Gossip Girl' is that it's not just preppy, it's super preppy,'' says Keith Carollo, buyer for fredflare.com. "Take it a little farther. Super-geek it out.''
He recommends suspenders, bow ties, handkerchiefs and grosgrain belts for boys, and a pair of glasses reminiscent of Buddy Holly's frames. "That's a really easy way to add a more nerdy dressed-up kind of Clark Kent look,'' he says.
Dialing up the fashion volume through mixing prints will be strong among girls as well, Baume says. ""(It's) what I call the mismatched lady trend, and basically it is in one outfit there's a stripe, a floral, and some
weird kooky plaid. So it's like putting a lot of elements together, but at the same time.''
UPDATE YOUR LOOK:Baume recommends a list of six items for girls: a pouffy mini skirt, a cropped tuxedo jacket, a small ankle boot with hardware and an oversized messenger bag that's worn across the body. She also suggests ""a cropped skinny jean or a high-waisted 70s jean, but it depends on what your body type is.''
Carollo likes lumberjack plaid in every form, plus ""a pencil skirt, a pair of jeans, a nice belt,'' or suspenders for both genders. ""For the girls, we're seeing a lot of little necklaces with little charms,'' he says. ""I see Jenny (Taylor Momsen) wear them on the show.''
He also suggests bold colors for boys, which he says can be from T-shirts by American Apparel made ""in all kinds of colors.'' Garth Mader, the director of buying at Endless.com, suggests fashion boots that boys can wear with trousers and girls can wear with dresses.
""I think it's a good investment, because there's a lot of kids who can wear a boot four or five different ways, four or five times a week,'' he says. For parents on a budget, he says ankle-length boots tend to be less expensive than boots with a tall shaft.
RAID SOMEONE ELSE'S CLOSET:If money is an issue, Baume says refurbishing a younger sibling's clothes is an inexpensive way to get this fall's fitted, cropped looks.
""Maybe find something that is old or your little brother's or something, and add some patches, make it yours,'' she says. ""Add a little bit of trim, be creative.''
AND IF YOU WANT THE REAL THING:""Gossip Girl'' costume designer Eric Daman says the characters will be sporting brands like Philip Lim, Vena Cava, Alexander Wang, Loden Dager and Rag & Bone. ""Dan only wears Marc Jacobs and John Varvatos,'' he says. (And Dan, played by Penn Badgley, is the poor one.)
Also look for anything with ""grey sharkskins, sequined tweeds, architectural drama,'' Daman adds.
And for those who can't find the brands at their local malls, Daman notes that the Web site for the show's television network, The CW, has links to purchase items featured in episodes.
Gossip Girl Hair Affair: Blake Lively
Posted on August 26th, 2008
If Gossip Girl star Blake Lively - who just celebrated her 21st birthday - were known for just one feature, it would probably be her amazing hair. Even among other gorgeous celebs, the blonde beauty's locks are distinctive.
Blake's hair can take many variations. Gossip Girl's official stylist, Jennifer Johnson, went for what she calls a "summery goddess" feel for Lively at the movie premiere of her latest effort, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.
Here's how she says you can emulate Blake Lively's hair... - Blow-dry hair with a diffuser and Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray.
- Curl hair with 2-inch curling iron. Pull out curls with fingers.
- elect random front pieces to twist and braid on each side of the head.
- Loosely pin back twists and braids with bobby pins. Spray with Bed Head Spray-on Shine and Bed Head Master Piece Spray all over.

Season 2 of Gossip Girl debuted at its premiere party August 17 with not only new episodes of the highly anticipated series, but with a stunning parade of outfits from the newest collections donned by the Gossip Girl cast:
Blake Lively was (probably) inspired by the Hamptons White Party, and looked gorgeous in Whitley Kros White Jeans, with a vintage Ralph Lauren top.
Leighton Meester is known for her love for dresses, and for the premiere party she looked stunning in a lemon Giambattisa Valli dress.
Taylor Momsen was all shining and sparkling in a Philosophy Spring 2008 top, which she wore as a dress.
Jessica Szohr wore a black an
d white Balencigga dress which, with its classic style, made her stand out from the rest at the party.
Finally,
Nicole Fiscella (not pictured) chose a Foley + Corinna dress, which was considered by many to be the best outfit at the party. If anyone can find a photo of
Nicole Fiscella there, please email us and let us know!
The Preppy Fashion Of Blair Waldorf

Gossip Girl character
Blair Waldorf is always sharp and ready to do what it takes to get what she wants - while being impeccably dressed, of course.
Below, Blair (
Leighton Meester) looks preppy pretty on the set of Gossip Girl, which is filming at Columbia on the Upper West Wide of New York, but is presumably supposed to be Blair's dream college - Yale - on the show.
