| In a flashback to the 80s, 17-year-old Lily Rhodes(Brittany Snow) gets kicked out of broading school and runs away to Los Angeles, reconnect ewith her parent, Rick (Andrew McCathy) and Cece(Cynthia Watros), and sister Carol (Krysten Ritter). Back in present day, Blair and Nate attend prom togrther, but the evening doesn't turn out exaclty as planned and Chuck and Serena had a little something to do with it. Serena and Lily don't see eye-to-eye over Serena's recent run run-in with the law. No Doubt performs in the flashbacks as an 80s band called "Snowed Out". | This extra special episode of GG starts out with a young and preppy Lily Rhodes calling her dad in LA, explaining how she got kicked out of boarding school. The rest of the episode goes back and forth between cool 80’s LA and present day NYC.
Back to Present Day NYC: Blair Chuck and Nate are waiting at the jail and kinda can’t believe it’s taking Lily so long to come spring Serena…and how could she accuse her own daughter of stealing, anyway? Clearly, she has never been in jail, right?
When Lily does get there, Serena attacks her for this situation and randomly for putting up her child for adoption. And when Lily tries to tell Serena that she did it for her own good, Serena is not hearing it. Turns out she used her one phone call to call Cece. Hmmm “If only she knew…”
Flashback to 80’s LA: Lily is meeting her Dad for lunch in LA, with some unpleasant news to share, that she got kicked out of boarding school. Her parents just got divorced and moved from NYC. Lily would like to move in with her dad (Richard) but Cece (her mom) shows up and starts to cause troubles. Lily is worried that now that her parents are divorced, her dad is going to forget about her. He says he is very busy with work and can’t have her live with him. Clearly, Lily blames Cece. They refer to Carol, Lily’s sister who ran away to become an actress. Lily leaves the restaurant and is supposed to be following her mother home, but somehow that seems unlikely.
Present day NYC: Lily is still pissed at Cece for telling Rufus about their child. Serena meanwhile, has chosen to stay in jail, until her mom agrees to let her be a grown up. Lily asks her to leave the house and leave the family alone. It is clear that she has issues with her mom, but also that she is scared she is turning into her.
Adorable moment: Blair has a scrapbook of her and Nate going to Prom together out on her table. When Dorota tells her that her dress was ruined at the cleaners, but a new dress arrives from France: her perfect Prom dress from the scrapbook! (that she doesn’t remember keeping and hasn’t looked at since she was an early adolescent….sure B)
Things have not been going great for Nate in the Prom department…it has just been one calamity after another. So Nate asks Chuck if he had anything to do with it, and he maintains that he didn’t.
Dan calls Lily to find out how mad Serena is…at Dan (right Dan, cause per usual the world revolves around you). He is shocked to learn S is still in jail. Lily goes back to the courthouse to drop the charges against Serena and learns that she has left the jail.
FLASHBACK to 80’s LA: Lily went to go look for her sister at her restaurant and is rude to Owen, co-worker of Carol’s, and then proceeds to overshare about her life and current situation, being broke, hating her parents, and recently kicked out of school. Owen invites Lily to a show where her sister will be, and gives her some super radical 80s clothes to wear….an awesome 80s style montage ensues. Amazing.
Amazing 80s band Snowed Out (No Doubt) is playing at this cool club in LA, where Owen is clearly a VIP. Carol runs into Lily and they storm out of the club. Lily and Carol catch up a little bit, with some judgment from Boarding School Lily. And she accuses her sister of bailing on them.
When they get to their destination, Carol tells them they are getting back at someone in the biz who ripped them off, Keith van der Woodsen and so they crash his party. Apparently, he had something going with Carol and also his girlfriend. Lily, scared of being thought of as a goody-two shoes starts to drink at the party and she is thisclose to making out with Owen on the dance floor.
Keith is now holding their music video for ransom unless Carol will go out with them. Lily is super offended and tried to stick up for her sister and soon a fight breaks out, with Lily beating the *@%& out of Keith.
So, Lily calls her mom from jail, and tells her she needs to figure out what she needs, and needs to be more independent, that sounds a lot like present day Serena and Lily. It ends up that Lily is staying with Carol for a while.
Present Day NYC: Nate and Blair show up at their perfect little prom and the mean girls show Blair they are nominated for Prom King and Queen and then proceed to commit ballot fraud, with a solo Chuck Bass standing mere feet away.
Dan goes to pick up Serena at the jail to try to make a mends for telling Lily (twice) about Serena’s secrets and thus indirectly leading to her incarceration. He brings her one of Jenny’s dresses and they head to Prom.
Lily goes over to the loft and asks Rufus if he was planning to propose. He confirms it. She tells him she is scared of turning into her mom. Rufus tells her she can change, but says he is not sure about the rest of it (ie: marriage)
Blair and Nate win Prom King and Queen despite the ballot stuffing (thanks to some un-stuffing by Chuck). He tells Serena that her dress looked better without the corsage, and he got rid of the hotel reservation so he could give them the penthouse suite at the Plaza…apparently Chuck has read her scrapbook as well. ..he wanted to make sure she had the perfect night. (so cute!)
Lily confronts Cece and they hash it out about making mistakes as parents, letting their children grow up independent rather than just fulfilling their parent’s idea of their destiny. They end up actually hugging, and we get the impression this might be the first time ever that those two have hugged.
Blair and Nate are slow dancing at Prom and she tells him that he is her first love and she knows they were always supposed to go to Prom together. But she talks about their relationship like it is over already, and Nate seems to be picking up what he is putting down. So after Prom B tells S that they broke up. B and S end the night together, just like the BFFs they are. Like GG says, shoulder pads may come and go, but a BFF is forever.
